Khumbu Icefall

Ang Sarki Sherpa, who has been working as icefall doctor for two decades, has witnessed the changes of climate change in Everest. Route opening through the mountain is becoming increasingly dangerous; this time they succeeded only in the third attempt.

Mount Everest, which experienced below-average snowfall this year, has been receiving more snowfall since Tuesday, bringing relief to climbers and Sherpas who were getting injured from rockfall during acclimatization and while setting up camps and routes.

Exceptional circumstances around route opening in world’s highest mountain has pushed Nepal government to take a “one time” extreme decision of allowing choppers to ferry goods up to camp II. Helicopters beyond base camp is only allowed for “search and rescue” or “emergency situation”.

High altitude workers are advised to avoid carrying heavy weight while passing through Khumbu icefall as the snow in the section is not yet fully stable. 

Rope fixing team has opened the route of Everest up to Camp II in third attempt. They followed the old route towards Lola peak after the ground around Camp I in the usual route appeared unstable.

A huge serac collapse triggered avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall sweeping 3 Sherpa guides with it. The damaged route has been fixed immediately, but the guides remain missing as rescue mission fails to locate them.

Nepal mulls over shifting of the Everest Base Camp to control local temperature rise due to uncontrolled human activity but some disagree.
