Student expedition team scales Mustang's Chulu Himal
A group of master level students from Nepal Mountain Academy has successfully scaled Chulu Himal in Mustang as part of their academic program, a first of such expedition in Nepali academic field.
A group of master level students from Nepal Mountain Academy has successfully scaled the 6,039 m high Chulu Himal in Mustang as part of their academic program.
16 students of Master of Adventure Tourism Studies (MATS) reached the summit of Chulu on 21st June as part of their mountaineering skills course. This is the first experimental expedition of this sort in Nepali academic field.
The Academy affiliated with Tribhuvan University had arranged a team of experienced international mountain guides, instructors and support staff to make climbing and learning possible at that altitude.
According to Uttam Babu Bhattarai, Academy’s administration chief, a 23-member expedition team including 16 students was led by IFMGA guides Tshiring Jangbu Sherpa and Ashish Gurung, while academic supervisor Behrouz Moghadashi accompanied the team. Alpine Sherpa Guide Treks and Expedition organized the expedition.
"The instructors taught students about snow, use of mountain gears and equipment, rope fixing techniques, ways of crossing crevasse, among other things", said Bhattarai.
"The expedition's success has also proven that it is possible to climb peaks in Manang and Mustang even during the monsoon," added Bhattarai.
