Qatari princess Asma Al Thani becomes 1st Arab to summit Kanchenjunga

Qatari princess Asma Al Thani on Saturday stood atop Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), becoming the first Arab to summit the third highest peak of the world, organizers said.

The 31-year-old member of the Qatari royal reached the summit with a six-member expedition team led by famed mountaineer Nimal Purja ‘Nimsdai’. Nimsdai climbed the peak this time without oxygen.

Other sucessful Kanchenjunga climbers include Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Lakpa Dendi Sherpa, Suman Gurung and Tenji Sherpa.

It took just two days for Thani to summit the peak, Purja said in a tweet.

Thani too took to instagram to announce her new feat. “I am humbled to be the first Arab to summit Kanchenjunga, hopefully to many more,” she shared with her 27000 followers on instagram.

Qatar Olympic Committee took to Twitter to celebrate Thani’s achievement as “A new Arabic achievement”.

She has successfully summited Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Manaslu (8,163m), seventh and eighth highest mountains of the world. She now plans to attempt at least two peaks — Everest and Lhotse this season.

More than three dozen climbers have successfully climbed Kanchenjunga since the summit push began last week.

Nepal has issued 68 climbing permits for Kanchenjunga, the third highest number of climbing permits for the season.
