Pasang Dawa Sherpa Climbs Everest for the 31st Time
The veteran Nepali mountaineer, known as PaDawa, completed his second ascent of the season, trailing only fellow climber Kami Rita Sherpa in total Everest summits.
Pasang Dawa Sherpa, a veteran Nepali mountaineer known as PaDawa, reached the summit of Mount Everest for the 31st time on Thursday, further securing his position as the climber with the second-highest number of ascents of the world’s tallest mountain.
According to Gobinda Gurung, managing director of TAG Nepal Treks and Expedition, which organised the expedition, Pasang Dawa reached summit at 4.20 am.
He added that Pasang Dawa had been carrying logistical supplies to Camp IV for the season’s final expedition team of the company rather than pursuing another climbing record.
“He did not have a private client of his own,” Gurung told Everest Chronicle. “He was ferrying supplies to Camp IV for the last expedition team and then went on to reach the summit before descending from Camp IV.”
Pasang Dawa has climbed Everest in several capacities: as part of rope-fixing teams opening the route each season and as a lead guide for foreign expeditions. Born in Pangboche, a village near Everest, he first summited the mountain in 1998.
It was his second successful ascent of Everest this climbing season; he first summited on May 18.
Only Kami Rita Sherpa, another renowned Nepali climber, has climbed Everest more times. On May 17, Kami Rita reached the summit for a record 32nd ascent, extending his own record for the most climbs of Mount Everest.
