Naila Kiani has become the first woman from Pakistan to summit 11 peaks above 8,000m by scaling Mount Makalu (8485m) on Sunday
According to her expedition organizer Imagine Nepal, Naila, who was assisted by Nepali guide Phur Galjen Sherpa, and seven other climbers reached the summit of the world’s fifth highest peak at around 9.10 am local time.
She started climbing 8,000m peaks in 2021. She summited Gasherbrum II (8,035m), becoming the first Pakistani woman climber to scale the peak. She shot to fame by scaling K2 the following year. Then she planned to climb all 14 eight-thousanders.
Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Kanchanjunga (8,586m) in Nepal and Shipapangma in China are left to summit. She is planning to scale Nepali peak this spring. She had to cut short her expedition to Shishapangma last October after massive avalanche swept away four climbers. Since China has officially closed expedition of Cho Oyu and Shishapangma, Naila will have to wait for another season to scale Shishapangma to join the 14 peaks club.
Similarly, Sashko Kedev from Macedonia also completed 10 of the 14 highest 8,000m peaks in the world.
