Manaslu opens for autumn climbing; records built
Manaslu haș opened for autumn season with American climber Chris Warner making 14 peaks record.
An American climber successfully summited Mount Manaslu (8,163m) on Wednesday becoming the second American to scale all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, organizer said.
“Chris Warner has successfully climbed Manaslu, the world's eighth highest mountain at 3:20 a.m. today with international mountain guide Tsering Sherpa from our company,” said Lakpa Sherpa of 8K Expeditions from Manaslu base camp.
Chris is the 51st climber to join the elite club of 14 peaks.
In 2005, Ed Viesturs from Seattle had become the first American to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks, an 18-year adventure that culminated in the summit of Nepal’s 8,091m Annapurna.
Similarly, Mingma Sherpa, chairman of Seven Summit Treks, also stood atop Manaslu on Wednesday affirming the true summit of the peak. Mingma is the first South Asian climber to complete all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters. He had previously climbed Manaslu in 2000, who completed summiting 14 eight thousanders in 2011.
Mingma tried to reach a real summit last year’s autumn, but was forced to abandon it after the weather worsened and most climbers abandoned the summit.
Record holding climber Tsering Sherpa of 8K Expedition had guided Chris in five mountains above 8000 meters- Nanga Parbat (8126M), Gasherbrum II (8035M), Gasherbrum I (8080M), Broad Peak (8051M) and Manaslu (8163M). Last July, Tsering had summited Mount K2 in just 12 hours 20 minutes.
According to Seven Summit Treks, Lakpa Tsering Sherpa accompanied Mingma to the summit.
Similarly, the fastest 14 peak climber Tenjen Sherpa aka Lama and Pakistani climber Shehroze Kashif, the youngest climber to climb 12 eight-thousanders are among other climbers to stood atop the world’s eighth highest mountain on Wednesday morning.
Interest in Manaslu has increased over the years after Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, a famed climber, revealed the true summit of Manaslu in 2021. A total of 301 climbing permits have been issued this season for Manaslu.
