Mount Annapurna has recorded the first ascent of the season with at least twelve climbers making it to the top of the fifth highest peak, expedition organizers said.
Nine climbers from Seven Summit Treks (SST) and three members of Imagine Nepal reached the summit of Makalu (8,485m) on Saturday morning. The SST team had laid out the route to the summit and guided multi-record holder Kristin Harila to the summit.
“Today, along with the Fixing team, Tenjen Sherpa and Lakpa Sherpa, Kristin conquered the 5th highest mountain, Makalu, at an impressive time of 8:35 am,” the SST updated its Facebook page.
Norwegian climber Kristin, who is on a mission to become the fastest person to scale all 14 peaks above 8,000m, scaled her third peak. She has already set a record of fastest woman to climb 14 eight-thousanders with summit of Shishapangma and Cho Oyu last week.
Kristin had summited the peakon May 27 last year in her previous project to scale all 14 eight-thousanders in less than six month to break Nimsdai Purja’s record. She completed 12 peaks in Nepal and Pakistan, but failed to secure visa and permit from China to scale Shishapangma and Cho Oyu in Tibet. This year, she changed the expedition agency and guides to scale the two peaks.
Other climbers who scaled Makalu include Chhiring Namgyal Sherpa, Dorchi Sherpa, Angdemba Sherpa, Furtemba Sherpa and Tenjen Sherpa. They were also the members of rope fixing team from the SST.
Similarly, Swedish Raul Eerik Helander, Pemba Chhiri Sherpa, and Ngima Nuru Sherpa were among other who summited the peak.
