Makalu records season's first summit
Eight climbers from Seven Summit Treks led by Lakpa Sherpa reached the summit of Makalu (8485 m) on Thursday.
Mount Makalu witnessed the first summit of the spring 2024 climbing season among Nepal's eight-thousander peaks, marking a promising start to the spring season in the country's mountains.
A team of eight Sherpas successfully fixed ropes to the summit, clearing the way for climbers to embark on their summit push on Thursday, according to the organizer Seven Summit Treks . "Summit Success on Makalu (8485m) this afternoon at 4:40 PM by Seven Summit Treks’ fixing team led by Lakpa Sherpa, also known as @makalu.lakpa," the Kathmandu based expedition operator announced on its official Facebook page.
This achievement marks the maiden ascent of an 8000-meter peak in the spring 2024 season.
According to the Department of Tourism (DoT), a total of four expedition groups, comprising 45 climbers, including 11 females, have obtained permits to climb Mount Makalu. Standing as the fifth highest peak in the world, towering at 8,485 meters, Makalu I is one of the most sought after peaks in the world.
Meanwhile, a separate group of climbers has been waiting a favorable weather window for their summit push at Mount Annapurna I, the tenth highest peak globally at 8091 meters. As reported by the DoT, 25 climbers have obtained permits to climb the peak.
The spring climbing season is in full swing in Nepal's Himalayas, with a total of 512 climbers securing permits to conquer 19 peaks.
