Kristin Harila scales Mount Shishapangma
Cho Oyu is the only remaining peak to summit for her to join the 14 peak club
Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, who is on a mission to break the world record for climbing all 14 of the world’s 8000-meter peaks in less than six months, climbed Mount Shishapangma on Wednesday, said her expedition agency.
Ten climbers successfully stood atop the world's 14th highest mountain, said her agency Seven Summit Treks
Harila’s press team confirmed her successful summit the peak, which it called a start of her race against Nirmal Purja's 14 peaks record of six months and six days.
This is Harila's thirteenth 8000-meter mountain. Cho Oyu is the only remaining peak to summit for her to join the 14 peak club.
Viridiana Alcarez Chavez, Sophie Marie, Therese Lavaud, Matias Myklebust, Tenjen Sherpa, Pemba Tenzing Sherpa, Chhiring Wongchu Sherpa and Ngima Rita Sherpa were climbers who made it to the top of the mountain from Tibet side.
She had started her fastest 14-peak climbing mission on April 28, 2022. She was well on her way to achieving it as she had finished climbing all 12 peaks from Nepal and Pakistan in record time. But her mission face an obstacle in the form of China not granting climbing permits to her or any other expedition teams due to the pandemic. Cho Oyu and Shishapangma, both of which are climbed from the Tibetan side, were the only 2 peaks left in Harila's mantle to be climbed.
Harila then changed her expedition company and got her visa for China. Her 12-peak climbing mates of last year -Pasdawa and Dawa Ongju Sherpa from 8K Expeditions have publicly expressed their befuddlement and confusion at how things have unfolded.
