Kristin Harila postpones search for Tenjen Sherpa on Shishapangma
After a long wait for permission to climb from Chinese government, Kristin Harila ultimately realized it was not possible to obtain permission to search for body of her climbing companion Tenjen Sherpa
Kristin Harila has aborted her plan to search for body of her climbing companion Tenjen Sherpa aka Tenjen Lama Sherpa on Shishapangma where he was buried in an avalanche last October, after China shut down both of the eigh-thousanders in Tibet.
Harila made the announcement in an Instagram post. "One of the goals I had coming to Nepal this spring was to go to Shishapangma for the search and repatriation of Lama and Gina. Sadly, this will not happen now," Harila wrote with a sad emoji.
Harila was planning to search for the body of Tenjen Sherpa, who died in an avalanche while climbing the eleventh highest peak in the world, situated in Tibet in 2023. Harila said that she was not giving up, hinting that she would try for the summit in the next season.
"Despite my sleepless nights and tired body, I don’t want to give up. I want to apply for permission again, for the next climbing window on Shishapangma. Maybe in October?" she wrote. Harila, along with her partner Tenjin, set a new record by climbing the world’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters (26,246 feet) in just three months and one day, faster than anyone in history.
The duo smashed the previous record held by Nirmal (Nims) Purja, who completed the 14 peaks in six months and six days, a feat featured in a Netflix documentary.
