Nepal will host the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) General Assembly 2026 in Kathmandu from October 28 to 31, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) announced. The decision was made during the recently concluded 2025 UIAA General Assembly held in Peja, Kosovo, which brought together representatives from more than 90 member associations across 73 countries.

According to the NMA, around 120 delegates from UIAA member federations are expected to attend the Kathmandu event, with NMA serving as the official host.

During the Kosovo assembly, Nepal also proposed two key agendas; the establishment of a Mountain Adventure University in Nepal with the support of the UIAA and its members, and the recognition of six additional 8,000-metre peaks in Nepal to acknowledge the country’s contribution to global mountaineering.

NMA President Phur Gelje Sherpa extended gratitude to the UIAA and the Kosovo Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation for their support and invited cooperation from all stakeholders to make the 2026 assembly a “memorable and meaningful celebration” of Nepal’s mountain heritage.
