Indian climber Jyoti Ratre has successfully stood atop Mount Everest, becoming the oldest Indian woman to climb the world’s highest peak.
The 55-year-old entrepreneur from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India, reached the summit at 6:30 am on May 19, according to Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions. She was aided by climbing guides Lakpa Nuru Sherpa, Ming Nuru Sherpa, and Pasang Tenzing Sherpa.
Ratre has previously summited several peaks including Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, Island Peak, and Kosciuszko. She had also climbed up to 8,160 meters on Everest in the past.
“I am overwhelmed with excitement and pride on hearing that she just summited Mount Everest. Her strength, determination, and resilience are truly inspiring,” her husband KK Ratre told Everest Chronicle.
This was Jyoti’s second attempt. She was forced to turn back from 8,160m due to high wind. She waited a significant time at Camp IV for the wind to subside. Later, she decided to quit and return next season to tackle the world’s highest peak. “And she did it, and she has proven that nothing is impossible,” said KK.
Ratre was a member of a 15-member expedition of 8K Expeditions led by Bolivian climber David Hugo Ayaviri Quispe, according to the Department of Tourism. The other members of the team include Henrik Lars Oliver Grethe, Mourad Ghanem, Rune Hana, Dwarka Vishwanath Dokhe, Daniel Paul Paterson, Kaspar Eevald, Zhao Xi, Chen Xue, Alexandre Ben Brahim, Pablo Roberto Buchbinder, Shamin Umesh Asaikar, Cecilie Nesheim, and Abdul Samad Jamder.
The second wave of summit pushes on Mount Everest has started since Saturday.
