Jay Whiting and Dawa Tenji Sherpa summit Lhotse in pursuit of Everest Triple Crown
The British-Nepali duo marks their second successful climb this season, aiming to complete all three peaks of the Everest Triple Crown by May 22.
British mountaineer Jay Whiting and renowned Nepali guide Dawa Tenji Sherpa successfully summited Mount Lhotse (8,516 meters) on Tuesday, marking the second peak in their ambitious "Everest Triple Crown" challenge this season.
The duo reached the summit at 11:40 AM local time as part of the HG Lhotse Expedition 2025, organized by Himalayan Guides Nepal. Iswari Paudel, Managing Director of the expedition company, confirmed the achievement.
“The duo will make their final ascent on Everest on May 22,” Paudel said. Earlier this season, Whiting and Sherpa had already summited Nuptse, the first leg of the challenge.
Dawa Tenji Sherpa is no stranger to high-altitude feats. He has already completed the Everest Triple Crown twice—once in just 16 days. If successful on Everest later this month, it will mark his third completion of the challenge. In addition to his Triple Crown accomplishments, Dawa has also summited Cho Oyu twice and Dhaulagiri once, expanding his impressive list of eight-thousander climbs.
The “Everest Triple Crown” involves summiting Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse—three of the world’s highest and most formidable peaks—within a single climbing season. Only a handful of climbers have ever achieved this rare and demanding feat.
