Jay Whiting and Dawa Tenji Sherpa conquer 'Everest Triple Crown'
British climber Jay Whitting becomes second from UK to complete rare mountaineering feat; Nepali partner Dawa Tenji Sherpa achieves third success in historic high-altitude challenge
British climber Jay Whiting and renowned Nepali mountaineer Dawa Tenji Sherpa successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest on Friday morning, marking the final ascent in their ambitious 'Everest Triple Crown' mission, according to expedition organizers.
The duo reached the top of the world’s highest peak at approximately 10:50 a.m. local time, confirmed Iswari Poudel, Managing Director at Himalayan Guides Nepal, the company managing their expedition.
With this achievement, Jay Whiting becomes only the second British national to complete the prestigious 'Everest Triple Crown' — a formidable feat that involves summiting three major peaks in the Khumbu region -- Mount Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), and Nuptse (7,861m)-- all in a single climbing season.
Dawa Tenji Sherpa, Nepali guide, celebrated his third successful completion of this high-altitude hat-trick.
“Few climbers attempt all three peaks in one season,” said Poudel. “While Everest and Lhotse are often summited in a single push due to their proximity, adding Nuptse to the equation elevates the challenge significantly.”
Whiting and Dawa kicked off their historic ascent with Nuptse on May 12, followed by Lhotse on May 20. Their original plan targeted the Everest summit for May 22, but high winds forced a temporary delay. “Unfavorable weather conditions held them back, but they persevered and summited a day later,” added Poudel.
Whiting’s Everest Triple Crown also carries a philanthropic goal. His climb supports LandAid, a UK-based property industry charity committed to ending youth homelessness. Through his campaign, Whiting aims to raise awareness and funds for the cause.
The Everest Triple Crown is an elite accomplishment in the mountaineering world. It was first completed in 2013 by legendary British climber Kenton Cool, alongside his longtime climbing partner, Dorje Gylgen Sherpa.
This season, Kenton Cool summited Everest for the 19th time, setting a new record for the most ascents of the world’s highest peak by a foreign climber. Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa holds the record for the most ascents of Everest, having reached the summit 30 times to date.
