A trekker from Mumbai, India died of high altitude sickness during Everest Base Camp treks in Nepal’s Khumbu region, police said .
Pradnya Ashwin Samant, 55, died during treatment at Gokyo International Clinic at 2.30 PM in Gokyo of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality on Friday, according to Nepal police inspector Shambhu Basnet.
Samant was rushed to the clinic after she developed symptoms of High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema while staying at the Himalayan Echo Hotel.
“Her body is being sent to Kathmandu later today,” inspector Basnet told Everest Chronicle.
Gokyo is nicknamed the “valley of death” because of frequent death of trekkers due to high altitude sickness.
Samant is the second Maharashtrian to die in the Himalaya after Narayanan Iyer who breathed his last near the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga on Thursday.
Everest region has seen a rebound in the number of trekkers and mountaineers after months of slump due to Covid19.
