Dawa Yangzum Sherpa becomes first Nepali woman to scale Broad Peak
Dawa Yangzum continues to climb 8,000ers setting record for Nepali woman climbers
Nepali mountaineer Dawa Yangzum Sherpa stood atop Broad Peak (8,051m) on Wednesday morning, becoming the first Nepali female climber to scale the 12th highest peak of the world, her expedition organizer Imagine Nepal said.
“Dawa Yangzum reached the summit around 8.30am local time, becoming the first Nepali female mountaineer to scale Broad Peak,” Dawa Futi Sherpa of Imagine Nepal told Everest Chronicle.
Dawa Yangzum, Nepal’s only internationally certified IFMGA female guide, led a team of five climbers comprising of Nepali and non-Nepalis. All members of her team -Pemba Sherpa, Ngima Nuru Sherpa, Jit Bahadur Sherpa from Nepal, American Savannah Palma and Canadian Charles Antonie- successfully made it to the summit with her.
Dawa Yangzum Sherpa is in a mission to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 meter. Broad Peak is her eighth 8000er.
Another Nepali female climber Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita is also chasing the 14 peak record. Akita has already summited eight peaks above 8,000m. She is also in the Karakoram mountains and currently attempting Gasherbrum II.
In recent years, Nepali female climbers are showing their prowess in the mountains. Many have set records in the mountaineering world.
Lhakpa Sherpa set a world record by climbing Mount Everest a record ten times this spring. Next year, she wants to summit Mount K2.
Another female climber Purnima Shrestha has also climbed seven peaks above 8,000m in Nepal. She did not join fellow Nepali climbers in Pakistan due to lack of funds. She also hopes to climb all 14 peaks above 8000m.
