Climbers conquer K2 seizing a narrow weather window
Nepali mountain guides open the route to the summit of K2 despite challenging weather condition, clearing the way for the season's expedition
Seizing a brief weather condition, Sherpa climbers opened the route to the summit of K2 on Sunday morning, expedition organizers said.
According to 8K Expedition, at least nine climbers stood atop the world’s second highest peak despite the unpredictable weather condition around 10.45 Nepali time.
Migma Dorchi Sherpa, Ashok Lama, Dawa Ongju Sherpa, Pemba Tasi Sherpa, Dawa Dorchi Sherpa, and Pechhumbe Sherpa were members of rope fixing team to fix the rope to the summit of the peak in challenging weather condition. Chinese Chen Xue, Hong Kong Tjhang Piao and Portuguese Maria Do Ceu Da Conceicao followed them right after.
The rope fixing team consisted of professional Sherpa climbers from 8K Expedition, Imagine Nepal, Himalayan Glacier Adventure, Madison Mountaineering, and Seven Summit Treks.
Climbers faced a month long high-speed winds, snowfall, rains, and unpredictable weather in Karakoram, which limited the progress. The weather started improving on Friday, enabling the climbers to commence their summit push.
“As the route opened so the remaining climbers can easily reach," said Sukhawat Hussain Sakhi, Managing Director of Summit Karakoram, adding "It is sunny day, and next two days also look favourable for summit."
