Kenton Cool improved his own record by scaling Mount Everest 16 times, the highest times by any non-Sherpa climber.
The famed British climber on Sunday announced the summit in his instagram post. “Kenton & Team have reached the summit of Chomolungma, Sagarmatha, Mt Everest. This marks KC’s 16th summit, a non Sherpa record,” read the post.
Khim Lal Gautam, a liaison officer, confirmed Kenton made it to the Everest summit on today morning at 5:25 am.
American professional mountain guide David Allen Hahn, aka Dave Hahn, also has summited Everest 15 times. Sunday’s summit gave Kenton a lead in the world record.
Along with Everest records, the 48-year-old global elite IFMGA guide also holds a record of completing Everest Triple Crown–Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m) and Nuptse (7,861m) back to back summit.
This spring, British climber Tim Mosedale along with Jay Whiting and Steve Graham made an attempt to do the Everest Triple Crown, but his team was forced to turn back 60 meter from the summit of Nuptse at around 7,800m due to there not being enough equipment to fix the final section.
On May 7, Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa scaled Everest 26 times, setting a world record for the highest number of climbs on the world’s highest peak. He has a record of climbing 8,000er 39 times.
Pasang Dawa Sherpa, 45, is right behind Kami Rita with 23 summits of Everest.
A total of 317 climbers have obtained permits from the department of tourism. “So far, 414 climbers and Sherpas have scaled Everest. Climbers are still at high camp for summit push,” said liaison officer Gautam.
