Rescuers have been trying to locate a climbing guide who has gone missing from Camp I of Mount Lhotse. Khudam Bir Tamang, a guide from eastern Nepal, was trekking down to the lower camp when he was presumably hit and swept away by an avalanche above the Khumbu Icefall.
Tamang was one of the two guides hit by an avalanche, according to Bhishma Bhattarai of the Department of Tourism.
“As per briefing made to us a guide has been rescued while the state of another one remains unknown. Rescue efforts are on,” Bhishma Bhattarai told Everest Chronicle.
Pasang Rinji Sherpa, the avalache survivor guide, was evaucated to Lukla by a helicopter this afternoon.
Both guides were part of South Korean climber Hong Sung-Taek’s team, which is trying to scale Mount Lhotse (8,516 meters) from the extremely dangerous south face. Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest peak which falls in Everest massif, as well as Nuptse shares the first three camps with Everest. The government has issued 27 climbing permits for Mount Lhotse.
