Mount Everest on Thursday recorded the first casualty of the 2022 spring climbing season after a Sherpa climber died while shuttling loads between Camp I to Camp 2 , police confirmed.
Nima Tenji Sherpa, 39, is believed to have fallen unconscious along the trail due to unknown medical reasons, according to constable Santosh Katuwal of Lukla police.
“There weren’t any bruises or scratches on his body. We have sent his body to Salleri for postmortem to find out more,” Katuwal told Everest Chronicle.
His colleagues told police that he might have died due to altitude sickness or exhaustion.
Nima Tenji was a member of the International Mountain Guides expedition and had been involved in hauling loads from the base camp to camp I and camp II with other members of his team.
A resident of Khumbu, Nima Tenji was an experienced Sherpa guide and had several Everest summits to his name.
This is the second death reported in Nepal’s eight-thousander peaks this spring. Earlier this week, Greek climber Antonios Sykaris died while descending from the summit of Mount Dhaulagiri.
According to the Department of Tourism, more than 250 climbers have acquired permits to climb Everest this year.
